It's a beautiful and unique Bald Cypress Swamp and there are so many species of fish found in the river we can't even list them all. Mostly known for it's largemouth bass and panfish fishing the river also offers some great opportunities for chain pickerel and long nose gar (see picture below). In fact I believe it could be likely that the next chain pickerel and long nose gar Maryland State Records could easily come from this river. Note that this is brackish water (meaning it has more salinity than freshwater and is tidal), which means that the movement of the tides it keys to figuring out the best fishing times. Most people think that an outgoing high tide is the best time to fish. Here is a link to the Maryland Tide Finder, look for Snow Hill or Pocomoke City which ever is closer to your fishing spot. March 2009 Long Nose Gar caught and released by the author in the Pocomoke River just above Snow Hill, recently featured on the Maryland Freshwater Fishing Report. See Pocomoke River Canoe Company for information on launching a canoe, kayak or motorboat from Snow Hill. Photo and landing of the fish goes to Lisa Hart, without her I couldn't have landed that fish.
